12 Days of Small Business: CoWo and Créche

Meet Founder Shamena Nurse-Kingsley featured in AEDP’s holiday series celebrating local entrepreneurs

The holiday season is in full swing which means it’s time to unwrap our next 12 Days of Small Business story. Meet Founder Shamena Nurse-Kingsley of CoWo & Créche, a community focused coworking space with childcare services located in Carlyle. Read on to learn more about what Nurse-Kingsley is looking forward to for the holidays and what special services she offers parents constantly on the go.

Name: Shamena Nurse-Kingsley

Business Name: CoWo & Créche

AEDP: Hi Shamena! Tell me a little about your business.

Shamena Nurse-Kingsley (SNK): We are a boutique coworking space providing safe and enriching childcare for working parents. All the while providing a community-centered thriving working environment for parents, teams, and individuals.

AEDP: I love how child-friendly your coworking space is. Tell me more about your Parent Flex Membership.

SNK: We created the Parent Flex membership for those parents who need CoWo & Créche to have their back when childcare needs do not go according to plan. Designed for parents who would need to drop in with their little one now and then as the need arises. These plans are on a quarterly timeline with a set number of visits. We have three options we believe will fit your needs.

AEDP: What sort of activities do you have coming up for kids? Tell us about your upcoming Winter Camp Next Week! STEM Event!

SNK: Level up your workday while your child unlocks the magic of STEM! Join our STEM Holiday Camp where coworking meets childcare, and young minds dive into a world of science, tech, and fun. Register now for a dynamic blend of productivity and play!

AEDP: What is the biggest challenge your business has faced?

SNK: The biggest challenge we faced while starting CoWo & Créche is navigating this incredible new role as entrepreneurs on top of being working professionals, parents, friends, etc. It is exciting and beautiful to see our vision come to life. It is taking intentionality with the help of our business consultant and our community. We are learning and growing, and we have the best members and community supporting us, including AEDP.

AEDP: Favorite thing about the holiday season in Alexandria?

SNK: There is a beautiful small business community here in this city that feels like a small town. It is one of many reasons we chose Alexandria City to build CoWo & Créche here. My favorite thing about the holiday season is how festive and creative businesses get with their decorations and how it brings the community together.

AEDP: What was the highlight of the year for you?

SNK: We started CoWo & Créche to provide a need for who we were as working parents. We knew that we wanted to help others so they wouldn’t have to sacrifice in the ways we did. The highlight for us has been the relationships and responses from our members and those who visit our space. They see our vision and want to be a part of it. We are in the changing life business, and it becomes more apparent with every story that is shared with us.
