Alexandria’s Popular Pop-Up Program Grows: Alexandria Economic Development Partnership Announces Partnership with The Art League

Alexandria, VA (March 29, 2018) – The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP) today announced the latest partnership for their growing and popular City pop-up program. AEDP is partnering with local arts organization The Art League and the International Institute of Photography to bring a collaborative and educational exhibition showcasing the artwork of at-risk girls from the City of Alexandria alongside the work of seminal female artists.

The first ever exhibition titled “Looking Up” will be temporarily on display from April 2nd through May 1st at 104 South Union Street. The gallery will feature the photography of ten-year-old girls from the SOHO Old Town (a Space Of Her Own) outreach program juxtaposed with iconic photographs of groundbreaking women in the field. The exhibit presents a multi-faceted portrait—from both the children’s and the professional photographers’ points of view—of a photographer’s relationship and creative response to her environment.

Since its launch in 2016, AEDP’s pop-up retail & art program has been growing in popularity and offers a variety of benefits and incentives for businesses who are looking for temporary space. The mission of the program is to match property owners who have empty first-floor vacant space with retail entrepreneurs and/or creative activation concepts on a short-term basis. With the City’s recent accolades as the “Number 1 Travel Destination in the U.S.” by Money Magazine, Alexandria is primed to be a great spot for entrepreneurs to pop-up and test their concept. The program also helps property owners raise awareness of vacant spaces by bringing temporary uses, and their customers and visitors, into their properties.

Past successful Alexandria pop-ups have included 116 King Street fashion pop-up, the Scrooge Emporium Ugly Sweater Holiday pop-up, and 104 South Union Street as a gallery and show space for several local artists. For more information on AEDP’s pop-up program, visit https://growalx.com/popup/.
