Inova Breaks Ground on Inova Alexandria Campus and Opens Inova Health Center – Oakville 

Inova broke ground at the new Inova Alexandria Campus in the West End and unveiled the Inova Health Center – Oakville. The two projects expand world-class care while fueling economic growth across the region. 

“It’s not just about building an amazing hospital with incredible architecture, development, and sustainability—everything that we expect to provide world-class services to the community—but also about catalyzing economic development.”

Hokies Land in Potomac Yard: Virginia Tech Opens First Building on Alexandria Campus 

More than six years in the making, Virginia Tech officially opened Academic Building One in Potomac Yard, welcoming nearly 500 students to its new facility, home to the Institute for Advanced Computing, . Through hands-on research and collaborations with industry and government, Hokies are strengthening Alexandria’s tech talent pipeline and tackling some of the country’s toughest challenges.

The City of Alexandria and AEDP Host the 2025 Alexandria Economic Summit 

“Every challenge is a call to action,” said Mayor Alyia Gaskins, setting the tone for an afternoon of bold ideas and spirited discussion. The Summit brought together City Council, business leaders, and residents for panels on the state of the economy and early insights from the forthcoming economic development framework to be unveiled in November 2025.  

“We evaluated multiple opportunities, but Alexandria stood out because we didn’t have to compromise on what mattered most—proximity to clients, employee accessibility, and the overall business environment.”

HUD Relocates Headquarters to Alexandria 

The U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) announced in June that it would relocate its 2,700 employees to Alexandria, moving into the Eisenhower Avenue building that currently houses the National Science Foundation (NSF) and bringing the first cabinet-level agency to the City. Since then, AEDP has been working diligently to ensure that NSF and its 1,800 employees remain in Alexandria as well 

What’s Old Is New Again: A New Crown Jewel is Added to King Street Through Adaptive Reuse  

The transformation of 1101 King Street into CityHouse Old Town, with 199 apartments and a waitlist of over 600 people, demonstrates Alexandria’s pioneering role in the art of adaptive reuse. By converting obsolete office buildings, the City is setting a national example for innovative redevelopment. 

Alexandria-Based Systems Announces Plans to Add 500 Jobs in Alexandria 

Systems Planning & Analysis announced a major Northern Virginia expansion, purchasing their longtime West End headquarters and announcing plans to add 1,200 jobs throughout the region, with 500 high-quality national security jobs coming to Alexandria over the next five years. AEDP worked with the company to help it access state-level incentives as well as a grant from the Alexandria Investment Fund for jobs created and investments back into the community from both the company and the City.  

Arts TV World’s Ethiopian New Year's Segment Featuring the AEDP Small Business Team

With 1.76M subscribers worldwide, Arts TV World featured AEDP’s Small Business team in its Ethiopian New Year’s segment! The spotlight showcased Alexandria’s Ethiopian entrepreneurs and put our City’s diverse business spirit on the global stage. 

Ironistic: The Alexandria Digital Marketing Agency Racing to Make a Difference

Founded in 2012, Ironistic has grown into a 40-person agency serving national clients, including Toyota, while remaining rooted in Alexandria. Their award-winning work and signature RUN! GEEK! RUN! 5K (which has raised over $234,000 for local nonprofits) shows how homegrown businesses can go the extra mile by giving back to the community. 

Turning Office Space Into a Housing Victory

After sitting vacant for more than 20 years, the 600,000+ square foot Victory Center office building at 5001 Eisenhower Avenue will become 376 workforce and affordable housing. AEDP worked with City departments to help negotiate a performance-based partial tax abatement for this huge housing investment—the first time a tax abatement has been used for a residential project in Alexandria.  

Taqueria Picoso Celebrates its 5-Year Anniversary of Adding Spice to the City’s Diverse Food Scene

From heirloom corn tortillas to traditional tacos al pastor, chefs Elio Gómez and Isaac Ramírez bring the heart of Mexico City to Alexandria’s West End. Their restaurant, Taqueria Picoso, is a delicious reminder of the City’s diverse food scene, where global traditions meet local community, and every dish tells a story. 

Sikich Awarded 2025 Great Place to Work® Certification: Why the International Firm Chose Alexandria

For global professional services firm Sikich, Alexandria “stood out” as the ideal home for its regional headquarters, offering proximity to clients, easy access for employees, and unmatched connectivity to institutions like the Department of Defense, the Pentagon, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Since planting roots in Carlyle, Sikich has expanded from 50 to 300+ employees, making Alexandria a cornerstone of its growth in the DC region. 

Portrait of a Storyteller: Laura Hatcher on Capturing Alexandria Through Her Lens

From 31 years in the Navy to a celebrated career behind the camera, Laura Hatcher has built a studio in Old Town Alexandria where personal stories come to life. She’s also made her mark through projects like the Virginia War Memorial’s “50 Years Beyond” exhibit alongside her headshots, branding, and military retirement portraits. Partnering with AEDP and mentoring Alexandria’s next generation of entrepreneurs; Hatcher proves that the City’s stories and legacies are worth capturing. 

Cornerstone Craftsman Celebrates Official Opening with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Founded in 2021 by Roberto Gomez, Cornerstone Craftsman has grown from living room workshops to a dedicated space on Eisenhower Avenue. Today, 36 pre-apprentices (and many more on the waitlist) gain hands-on trade skills, mentorship, and OSHA certification, equipping Alexandria’s youth with the tools (literally and figuratively) to build brighter futures. 

The City of Alexandria & AEDP Host Listening Session for Impacted Federal Workers, Contractors, and Small Businesses

Changes at the federal level are perhaps the economic story of the year. As part of an ongoing response, AEDP and the City brought business leaders together for a candid listening session on how federal changes are affecting local companies and worked with regional leaders to establish a webinar series for anyone looking for support with a job search or pivoting to entrepreneurship.  

The City also stood up a Resources for Federal Government Employees webpage and hosted job fairs with regional partners and Rep. Don Beyer’s office. 

GSA Seeks New Office Space for NSF in Alexandria

In August, the General Services Administration issued a presolicitation notice to gather information on buildings in a small area in Alexandria that could serve as a new headquarters for the National Science Foundation. The move is an important step in retaining the agency and comes after concerted efforts by AEDP to ensure the foundation and its vital mission stay in its Carlyle neighborhood. 

AEDP Small Business Expands Its Services into More Languages

The AEDP Small Business team is reaching more underserved entrepreneurs with new resources in Amharic and Spanish, bringing its total to eight languages, including Dari, Korean, and Russian. The team also conducts neighborhood outreach and meets entrepreneurs in their commercial districts to connect them with tailored support.
