Featured ProjectAnnounced in conjunction with Amazon’s November 2018 revelation that its new HQ2 will be located in Northern Virginia, the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus is one of the most exciting projects in the pipeline for Alexandria. The Commonwealth of Virginia’s Tech Talent Investment Program (TTIP), which aims to graduate at least 25,000 new bachelor’s and master’s students in computer science and related fields over the next 20 years, will provide half the project’s funding, while Virginia Tech raises the remaining funds. When completed, the $1 billion, 600,000-square-foot campus will graduate 750 master’s students and host more than 100 doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows annually, providing talent to fill crucial job roles throughout Northern Virginia.

Timeline
The first cohort of students will begin their studies in fall 2020. Virginia Tech will occupy start up space while planning continues, and construction begins on the permanent campus.
The campus will provide instruction, research, office and support spaces for graduate-level programs in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, as well as select other programs. Experiential learning environments within this building will be designed to enhance the Virginia Tech experience including flexible multi-purpose areas, research and testing labs, and maker spaces. The adjacent district will boast incubator space for new startup companies, research and development, offices for industry collaboration, and additional space for alumni events. These types of spaces provide a platform to connect Virginia Tech with its partners and community.
Construction will be phased:
- Phase One:
- ~4-acre site with campus common areas and ~300,000 gross square foot academic building
- Concept plans submitted to the city November 1, 2019
- Planning, zoning and permitting expected to last approximately a year
- Building scheduled for completion in 2024
- Future Phases:
- Two 150,000-square-foot academic buildings
- Timeline to be determined
As with any major development project in the City of Alexandria, there are a variety of opportunities for community feedback and input. AEDP is working with Virginia Tech to identify companies committed to the type of cutting-edge research and discovery that will be a cornerstone of the new campus and recruit them to partner with the university and co-locate on the campus.
