Around the world, pop-up retail has become an integral part of enhancing retail districts. The concept offers short-term activation to storefronts and businesses of all sizes. Given Alexandria’s thriving retail scene and appeal to entrepreneurs, we were excited to bring pop-up retail to life through our development initiative, Pop-Up ALX.
The newest addition to Pop-up ALX is Gallery 104— an exhibition by architect Michael Winstanley that will run through the holidays. The gallery will showcase original hand drawings, framed pieces, and limited edition prints. Works by Jessica Marcotte’s collection “Light Works… on paper” will also be displayed. Here’s a brief timeline of Pop-up ALX’s involvement:
—Pop-up ALX got its start in 2016 with the 116 King Street Holiday Pop-up. AEDP worked with the landlord and business owner to identify retail space and facilitate the lease process. 116 King went on to be a successful pop-up concept and has re-opened on its own three times since.
—Following the success of the 116 King Street holiday program, the initiative received the city support needed to develop and facilitate pop-ups city-wide.
—Over the past few months, our staff curated the details of Pop-up ALX and worked with landlords to identify space that could be utilized (more details on our landlord program to come). Doing so helped us realize the potential success of another holiday season pop-up.
—This realization eventually inspired our involvement in Gallery 104, organizing and facilitating the overall process. The seasonal art pop-up will offer Alexandria residents and visitors a chance to view and purchase the work of Michael Winstanley.
The goal of Pop-up ALX is to bring together entrepreneurs, artists, makers, and businesses, both local and national, to activate vacant storefronts, enhancing the existing vibrant retail community within Alexandria. Given the success of Pop-up ALX as both a retail and arts-focused concept, we hope to expand our portfolio to include events, food, national retail, or other concepts in the future.
